Hartz Mountain Corporation Moves to Discontinue Topical Flea and Tick Products for Cats in 2006
New Product Planned for 2006 Flea and Tick Season

Secaucus, New Jersey - The Hartz Mountain Corporation has announced its plan to discontinue an over-the-counter topical flea and tick product for cats. The product will continue to be sold in retail outlets until next spring when Hartz will launch a new product for cats.

The product that will be discontinued is Hartz® Advanced Care® 4 in 1® Flea and Tick Drops Plus for Cats and Hartz® Advanced Care® 3 in 1™ Flea and Tick Drops for Cats. No other Hartz Mountain flea and tick product is affected by this action.

Hartz signed an agreement with the Environmental Protection Agency on Friday, June 3, 2005, setting in motion the voluntary cancellation of the product registrations for the Advanced Care topical cat products.

This voluntary request by Hartz is being taken following discussions with the EPA. The Agency intends to issue a cancellation order that will permit the continued sale of the product through March 31, 2006. By March 31, 2006, the product will be removed from distributor and retail shelves.

The Hartz voluntary cancellation is prompted by concerns over the number of adverse reactions that have been reported by cat owners using the product.

Signs of individual animal sensitivity have included skin irritation, hair loss at the application site, salivation, tremors (twitching of muscles), and in some circumstances, severe full body tremors. If signs of sensitivity do occur, cat owners are instructed to bathe their pet with mild soap, rinse with large amounts of water and consult a veterinarian immediately.

Hartz is dedicated to providing the best possible products so pets can lead longer, happier and healthier lives. Hartz takes adverse events seriously and strives to minimize them at all times.

Consumers with questions can call the Hartz Consumer Relations Department at 800 275-1414.
